‘It’s important to me that I’m connected to (and accredited by) the most respected body in coaching worldwide. I have clients from all over the world and I believe it means something to them too. In addition, professionalising the profession is something all coaches should be committed to and this is one way of enacting that.’

WHY TAKE YOUR ACC?

This is a telediscussion with Lisa Wynn, MCC
on Wednesday 26th November 2008 at 12pm UK time

One of the great growth spurts I have made as a coach was when I trained as an ICF assessor. It as an exciting, stretching, demanding experience and one that I enjoyed every second of.

What I have enjoyed even more is being an assessor. Every week I get to connect with another coach from anywhere in the world from the UK to Australia, to be coached by them and then to share a feedback session with them. They usually start the session very nervous but end up effusive and excited. The development it has given them and the focus it has created is firmly on their future development as a coach.

When I took my first credential level I was quite resistant to the competencies and felt them to be restrictive if informative. As I have worked my way through to MCC, I have fallen in love with the competencies! I have learnt that they are foundational, not limiting; expansive rather than restrictive. In spending so much time with ACC candidates I have loved returning again and again to the coaching foundations. I have found a deep respect for the simplest of approaches to coaching.

As an assessor I get the chance to connect with, learn from and help those newer to the profession than I am, to share the things I wish I had known much sooner in my own coaching career. My own journey through the competencies has been exciting, fulfilling and of course, continues every day. To those who feel the credential system is about the ICF, rather than coaching or coachees, I say – come and play with that idea at that forum. I used to agree with you.
